Hi folks, I thought it a good idea to start a thread for getting to know each other a bit better. So outside of photography, what do you get up to? Hobbies, interests etc? Where in the world are you? Fave films/music? Any big ambitions (which may include a photographic aspect to it)?

I am a biker based in North East England. My main interests outside of photography are: Motorbikes; music (all types); travelling; reading.

When EasyJet started flying from Newcastle Airport, we took advantage of the cheap flights and visited Barcelona (twice), Palma and Nice. I enjoy all things Spanish (tapas, chorizo, Brandy de Jerez, red wines from the tempranillo grape) and look forward to more visits.

I am preparing to write a book about photography.

I am an engineer based in the South of England. Aside from photography I have an interest in robots. I am also an avid reader and have a wide range of tastes, that span from Harry Potter to Chekov.

Interests? Now let's see; well there is photography, photography, oh and er... photography.

Mind you it must be with film and preferably using rangefinder cameras (modern and old).

Other interests are the theatre, cinema, reading and history.

However my main interest is... well photography! :D

I sell auto parts. And, aside from spending time with my wife and children, my interest is photography. I shoot 4x5, primarily near my Milton, Delaware home.
Thank you.

I am Steve. By day I am an electronic/mecahnical engineer for a company who make a variety of products. We are primarily a screen printing company but not in the usual way. We print conductive silver inks (and others) to make flexible circuits which can be part of a membrane switch control panel or interconnect. We also make medical test strips such as those used by diabetics to measure blood glucose levels.

In my own time I am a photographer who uses 35mm, medium format and occasionally 5x4. I did have my own darkroom in the loft but we are moving house this Friday - then I will be able to build one in the spare bedroom. I also like building cameras.

I also play guitar in a couple of bands - the most regularly gigging band being one specialising in 1950s rockabilly. I am also a mandolin, ukulele and banjo player.

Although I am an electronic engineer at work, my personal interest in electronic equipment only extends to using valves. I have built some recording equipment such as microphone pre-amplifiers and a couple of years ago I built a nine channel all valve mixing desk for a friend.

I'm a Harley enthusiast and photography is a close second. I'm retired Air Force and retired again as an engineer. 52 years of age. I'm currently in business with a partner running a Harley and Other american big twin custom parts website, but located in my partners business.
I currently have 2 A1's, 2 AE1's, and a bunch of canon glass. I prefer B&W, but shoot color also. Mostly outdoor photography, odd objects, old remains of buildings, interesting earth formations, and just about anything that suits my fancy. I have been involved since about 1977 or thereabouts, but still consider myself a neophyte. I did win a 100 U.S. dollar gift certificate at a camera store contest in Denver Co, in the late 70's, which was hilarious, because a friend who was very advanced at that time talked me into entering a photo that I was developing at the base photo hobby shop, and he really liked it. I was extremely reluctant, being a absolute beginner, but let him talk me into it, with myself thinking I'd be laughed at. Not much, but, hey, a hundred was pretty rich for a young airman at that time.
Never accomplished anything other than that, just shoot for fun and my own enjoyment.
Nowday's, living arrangements don't include a "proper" darkroom. I shoot, develop the neg's, and use a Optitek scanner to scan into photoshop elements. Lucky to have a full service camera store, very close to my place, that still does developing/printing, so if I want a print, I just use them.

Anyway, nothing very exciting about me, just thought I'd participate in this thread.

I am retired, first retirement was from the Marine Corps and second was from mortgage banking. I really enjoy film cameras and consider myself a novice. I prefer the Yashica brand cameras but do own a few non Yachicas too. I live in North Carolina and hope to take advantage of the photo ops the state presents from the coast to the mountains.

Hello

I'm a Project Manager based in the south east of England. My interests are photography, photography and well photography. Mostly I use rangefinder cameras both in 35mm and medium format using good old film. I have a small collection of cameras dating from 1890 up to modern 2010 and am a member of The Photographic Collectors Club of Great Britain.

I do own a digital camera as well, for snaps and illustrative work, but try not to mention if I can avoid it!

I was out and about recently with my beloved 1937 Contax II rangefinder camera and was delighted to be refered to as "Old school cool" by a bunch of digital camera wealding photographers at the same event.

Old school film and cameras are indeed "cool".

Oh, I also like reading, cinema, theatre and heritage steam railways.

Hi Andy

yes the manual canon cameras are good bits of kit...shame you was not around the forum earlier as I just sold only last week a suiperb mint condition Canon T90.

If your going canon and manual like the AE1 or something you better get rid of that eos 300 auto focus sooner rather than later, so you dont pick up any bad habits....but....if you consider moving forward from it...then a eos 3 or eos 5 would be considered a good move up?

Si.

hi si

just read some reviews on the t90 it seems like the bees knees and some say the best 35mm canon ever !
that said i have been using the eos 300 in manual focus for close ups and some portrait stuff so going for an a1 would n't worry me to much i think.when you say bad habits what are those like i say still only getting to grips with film so still a total newbie. are the eos 3 or 5 the best canon film camera for amuaters or can you suggest others?maybe another brand all together although i do think i would rather stick with canon because i'm so pleased with my 300 !

cheers for your help andy

well Andy......I presume that althou you are using manual focus I bet your using auto aperture and shutter speed combinations....so you are not learning about exposure and exposure values...only what you see in the view finder as the camera stes one or the other for you ?

So going a step further you are better to use a light meter and read the light your self and then punch in the aperture and shutter value into the camera that the light meter gives you ...then you will be using manual focus and manual value settings? Of course the light meter will give you many exposure values that will give you a exceptable exposure, bearing in mind the film speed and lens you are using for the job at hand? Once you get to grips with the basics about exposure then you will then and only then be able to get creative by shooting under and over exposure, shooting into the light for special effects with your settings and so fourth.
